Introducing the Hallways App… Social Networking for Hostels!

by Katie Dawes

Hi guys!

So I am SUPER excited as today I can finally introduce you to a new social network app for hostels that I was introduced to a short while back… the Hallways App.

It has a very simple concept:

  1. Connect with Facebook (your last name will always remain private)
  2. Check in to a hostel, or one that you will be staying at in the future
  3. See who else is staying in your hostel, or in others nearby
  4. See what events are taking part in your hostel whilst you’re there – you can even create your own event which others can see and attend!

So I tested it out! Which was a bit naughty as I’m not actually going anywhere soon, but you are also given the option to check in to a whole city if you’re not too sure yet which hostel you’ll be staying at. You’ll then be part of that hostel’s, or city’s, network and be able to see who else it staying there in between your check in and check out dates, as well as what events are going on during your stay there!

My number one reason for my love of hostels will always come down to the social aspect, and yet sometimes you will be staying at a hostel with no common area, or you might arrive late when a lot of the guests are already out exploring the town. With a simple check in (just like you would on Facebook) you’ll be able to send other guests a message to see what they’re up to, or go find them if their event is already listed.

I instantly thought of guests in my old hostel who would arrange to go on the free walking tours with each other and you’d always have two or three groups making separate plans due to staying in different rooms or missing each other in the common room. All a guest needs to do is set up a walking tour event and state the day and time and they can all meet up beforehand and head down together!

It’s also a great concept for hostels themselves. Hostels are able to advertise their own events, and anyone checked in online would be able to see the event, therefore making sure they don’t miss out because a staff member forgot to mention it, and also giving the hostels the opportunity to increase their attendance at planned events. I know this definitely would have come in useful in Budapest with events such as the weekly spa party, or the booze cruise along the Danube! The more the merrier!

Finally someone has thought of us hostel travellers!

…and that someone is Ben Moshe, who has not only created this awesome social network for us, but agreed to tell us more about it!

So make sure you guys check by the blog tomorrow as I will be inviting you all to see what Ben’s responses were when I interrogated him about his new app…and you will even be able to listen to it on The Hostel Girl Podcast!

I know, I’m too nice to you guys!

So check out the website and if you want to know more come and say hi tomorrow listen to the interview!
