When I look at what I consider to be ‘essential’ packing items, I realised how much it says about me as a person. So when Clink Hostels asked me to put together some flat lays of my essential travel items, I ended up with five flat lays that each represent a little bit about me.

What’s in My Backpack?
Blogging Essentials
As a blogger, my most important travel essentials are those I create content with.
And, as you’ll see again in another picture, I manage to get photobombed a lot by animals! The cat in this flat lay is Foxglove, a badass Moroccan stray who befriended those of us who used to hang out outside our friend’s apartment in Tamraght.
My blogging essentials include:
- MacBook Pro (with stickers from my favourite brands and hostels)
- iPhone 5
- Sony a5000 – read my review here
- Passport
- Leather notebook
- Map of Iceland
- Foxglove (the stray cat who had found a home in the alley outside my friend’s house in Tamraght, Morocco)
Entertainment Essentials
Some travellers really enjoy the transport part of travel – i.e. taking a flight or a train to the next destination.
I’m kind of over that part and get super bored! So I carry quite a lot of things to keep me entertained on the road.
My travel entertainment essentials include:
- iPod classic – it holds so many tunes!
- Kindle paperwhite
- Books
Clothing Essentials
Alert: animal photobomb again! This cute little pug isn’t a stray though, he’s my parent’s gorgeous pug Frankie who I love hanging out with when I visit home!
So whilst I always end up trying to pack too many books or toiletries, I actually travel with very few items of clothing. These are just a few of my favourites.
My clothing essentials include:
- Black suede ankle boots from New Look
- A wrap scarf from H&M
- A Black and white blazer from Primark
- My favourite crazy harem pants from Albert Cuyp Market in Amsterdam
Makeup Essentials
I have no idea about makeup so I literally just travel with the items above. It gets me through the day without anyone noticing the bags under my eyes – so that’s all that matters!
My makeup essentials include:
- Bourjois bronzing powder
- Rimmel London face powder
- A makeup brush
- Dove Fresh roll-on deodorant
- Creightons Frizz No More hair serum
- Barry M Genie lipstick
- Maybelline waterproof mascara
- Argan Cream moisturiser
- Contact lenses
- Kohl eyeliner
More blogging essentials
The first blogging essentials flat lay showed the items I use to create content with, whilst the ones above are the ones I use to protect my content with!
Trust me, if you work on the road and don’t back up your laptop multiple times – you will regret it!
My other blogging essentials include:
- Two external harddrives
- An Anker portable backup charger
- Three backup SD cards for the camera
- A universal charger
- Various cables (I actually carry about 15 different cables but they didn’t look so pretty so I picked the tidiest three!)
What travel essentials do you carry?
Share them with Clink Hostels on Instagram with the hashtag #ClinkWIYB to win the competition. And also tag #thehostelgirl so I can take a look too!

Great post Katie. I’ll try and get a post up! I was actually looking at ClinkNOORD hostel in Amsterdam yesterda. It looks good! Also thanks for your post about bus travel through Europe. I was meant to get on a bus tonight to go to Brussels but have cancelled due to the attacks. Ouibus (formerly IDBus) kindly refunded my ticket so now I am stuck at home for now.
Now, I’m just trying to figure about what to do with the rest of my time off work. I don’t feel like travelling at the moment, plus the prices are far too high. I think I just need to take a shower and clear my head a little.
Thanks Haroon! I’m glad the bus post has helped – have you checked the video I also did for ClinkNoord (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Sev2lnv55c)?
Ah it’s such a shame about Brussels, for all those involved and those who had travel plans to visit. OUiBus are great though – I travelled with them to Paris this week! Where are you based?
Seen the video already!
Based in south east England, from London originally. Travel abroad 5 or 6 times a year in between a full-time job. Not the easiest thing to do but I manage quite well. Have also cancelled my trip to Amsterdam next week. What are you up to at the moment?
Wow – 5/6 times a year with a full time job is fantastic! It’s a shame you have cancelled your trips but hopefully you can rearrange them for the future 🙂
