At the end of 2017, I took a took a tour with The Roman Guy of the hidden gems of Rome . We stepped behind one of Rome’s most beautiful fountains, we explored an ancient 16th century pharmacy, and we tasted what was, in my opinion, the best buffalo mozzarella in Rome!
Introducing I Formaggi di Gianni e Paola
What makes I Formaggi di Gianni e Paola so special?
Gianni e Paola
My whole experience at I Formaggi di Gianni e Paola was a pleasure from the moment we walked into the store and were greeted by husband and wife, Gianna and Paola.
The couple instantly started preparing different cheeses onto tasting plates for those of us on the tour to devour. Coupled with bottles of Prosecco, we proceeded to cluster into one corner of the shop directly in front of Paola, where she enthusiastically began explaining the creation process behind their succulent balls of mozzarella.
Paola spoke to our tour group exclusively in Italian. Luckily, we had Brandon with us from The Roman Guy to translate. But it was a tough job! Paola expressed her enthusiasm for her cheeses in long, passionate, and fast-paced explanations that Brandon had to try his best to condense into English.
Their combined presentation was hilarious to watch, and showed just how close the relationship is between The Roman Guy and their partners in Rome.
The best buffalo mozzarella in Rome
Secondly, it goes without saying that another thing that makes I Formaggi di Gianni e Paola so special is their passion for producing the best buffalo mozzarella in Rome!
The couple have had their shop since 1984. But they also own the farm on which they produce the mozzarella, which means that they oversee the entire production stage from the very beginning to the moment they sell the mozzarella in their store.
It’s this attention to detail that has refined their production process over the years.
The combination of their passion for what they produce with the the incredible product they sell today made what I tasted in I Formaggi di Gianni e Paola simpy the best buffalo mozzarella in Rome!
How much does the best buffalo mozzarella in Rome cost?
The buffalo mozzarella at I Formaggi di Gianni e Paola costs €18.00 per kilo. Obviously, unless you’re having a huge cheese party, you’re not going to be buying a whole kilo! Although I was tempted before leaving the store…
Oh and if you’re not into mozzarella… they sell incredible fresh Parmigiano that they opened especially for us!
