After teasing you with a behind-the-scenes look at the village of Tamraght in Morocco with my recent article Doors of Tamraght, I figured that it’s finally time to tell you more about the village I called home at the end of 2015…
Top 5 Things to do in Tamraght
1. Eat Brunch at Babakoul
I honestly can’t tell you how many coffees I must have drunk at Babakoul over the course of the two months I spent in Tamraght.
The boys would joke that Tommi and I were on a strict diet of seven a day – and some days they may have been right!
With fantastic food at a great price, staff who I miss with all my heart, and a cosy relaxed atmosphere inspired by a view of the beach, wide wooden benches and overshadowing trees, my stay in Tamraght wouldn’t have been the same without Babakoul.
Our daily trips to sit with the stray cats and puppies who make their beds amongst the Babakoul cushions was a highlight of my time in the village.
Sometimes, something as simple as sharing a coffee with friends under a hot sun is all you need.
2. Spend a day on the beach
The beach from Tamraght seems to stretch for miles North, until it meets Taghazout.
If you’re in need of exercise it makes for a great walk (Tamraght to Taghazout takes just over an hour each way) but for those who just want to relax in the sun and dip their toes in the water there is more than enough beach for everyone!
And if you’re lucky enough, one of your friends will adopt a puppy which of course makes all future trips to the beach even more fun!
Our friends Caroline and Martin adopted Paula and then went for a surf which meant Tommi and I got some quality time with the energetic pup!
3. Watch the surf from Devil’s Rock
I know what you’re going to say…! And yes, there is little surf and no surfers in the picture below!
But this is in fact one of the most popular spots to ride in Tamraght, and one of the best places to watch from is the top of Devil’s Rock!
So called because apparently the Devil was buried alive below the rock(!) it takes just one short staircase carved in stone to get to the top and not only can you watch the surf from there but you also receive a stunning view of Tamraght from the water.
4. Climb to the top of the village for the view
Ah, if only those lines below were zip lines straight to the beach!
They’re not – they’re actually power lines – but the photo doesn’t lie about the view.
The large empty area between the beach and the town has unfortunately recently been sold off as part of the Taghazout Bay developments that are taking place to increase tourism to the area.
Which means that this view will look very different very soon.
5. Stay at The Lunar Surf House
I stayed and worked at The Lunar Surf House for just over a month, during which time I had the pleasure of seeing this stunning sunset almost every night!
And you can just about spot how close the surf house is to the beach in the picture below of the view from their terrace!
Not only is the view from The Lunar Surf House fantastic, but the food served is a mix of the chef’s menu and a traditional Moroccan spread of tajine, salad and more!
Above all, the owners Irena and Adil do their best to make everyone who stays with them feel at home… even going all out to dress up with me on my 25th birthday!
It’s been a while now since I left Morocco, but when I return I will definitely be returning to Tamraght!
