It’s no secret that Hostel ROOM Rotterdam is one of my favourite hostels. If you want to know why, click here to read my full Hostel ROOM Rotterdam Review.
And because it’s one of my favourites, I can’t help making any excuse to return to Rotterdam and visit the awesome Hostel ROOM team! Which is how I found myself testing out their luxurious new private penthouse room: The Koepel.
Quick note: I stayed in Hostel ROOM Rotterdam’s Clock Tower Room back in February 2017, before it was fully completed. So any photos that don’t have my copyright in the bottom right corner (© The Hostel Girl) have been provided by the hostel.
Hostel ROOM Rotterdam Review: Introducing The Koepel!
The Dutch word koepel literally translates to ‘dome’. Which in the case of the private clock tower room at Hostel ROOM refers to its high domed ceiling that gives the penthouse an added air of spaciousness and modern luxury.
Painted white, with light teal highlights, The Koepel is now a far cry from its days as a dark dorm room for hostel volunteers.
Instead, the bright walls part for huge rounded windows that give guests an extra special view of Rotterdam that few other others will witness from the hostel. It’s a view of the rooftops of Rotterdam, in all the city’s architectural splendour.
Hostel ROOM Rotterdam Review: The Koepel Facilities
Inside The Koepel sits a sunken double mattress, furnished with super soft quilts and blankets to give you the cosiest night’s sleep. Seriously, the bed was so hard to leave the next morning.
The private room also has a modern en-suite shower, and it’s very own kitchenette! So you can rise and shine to coffee in bed, before heading down to the extensive breakfast spread you’ll find in the lounge every morning.
But, The Koepel isn’t just any old private hostel room…
In fact, it has its own hallway and private staircase before you enter the bedroom. The steps are a little steep to the top. But the whole apartment offers an incredible amount of space to make you feel like you’re living in your own little penthouse in Rotterdam.
There’s even a record player and records on a small table under the window!
And if you need any more convincing, it’s time to introduce you to my favourite part of The Koepel.
At the top of the staircase, and before you enter the room, you’ll see a door to your very own private balcony.
And when I say private, I mean private. As it’s at the top of the private staircase (to which only guests of The Koepel have the key), no other guest in the hostel will know it’s there. Unless you tell them at breakfast of course.
Hostel ROOM Rotterdam Review: How To Book The Koepel
A night in The Koepel costs €90 per night. But considering it has a double bed, and a loft that fits two more people, it’s the perfect bargain if you’re travelling as a couple or in a small group. In fact, if you split the cost between four people you’re paying about the same price as you would for a bed in a shared dorm.
Personally, I believe that The Koepel is the perfect place to spend a city break. Not only because of the luxury, but also because it comes hand-in-hand with the rest of the incredible hostel atmosphere that you can experience in Hostel ROOM. Not sure? My night’s stay in The Koepel clock tower room at Hostel ROOM Rotterdam was provided free of charge by the hostel during a visit in February 2017. However, I am a massive fan of this hostel and its staff (if you don’t believe me, click here) and would never write about something here that I didn’t love myself.
So, I hope you get the chance to stay in this luxurious private room too! And if it’s a bit out of your budget, then at least make time to stay in a dorm at Hostel ROOM Rotterdam. Because this hostel rocks!

Now that is a very fun room!! What a great place 🙂 I only live 40 mins from Rotterdam, so I hardly ever have enough reason to stay the night. Too bad huh!
Well you never know… Hostel ROOM would make for a great city break 😀
Interesting place … might have to stay there on my next visit to Amsterdam!
I couldn’t recommend this hostel more Caroline – one of my favourites of all time!
