Needless to say, smartphones have completely changed the way we travel. If I’m honest, I don’t think I’d have experienced half the places I’ve eaten at, or half of the sights I’ve seen, if I didn’t have my iPhone always at hand. Which is why this collection of free Madrid travel apps came in SO useful on my last trip to Madrid with Safestay Madrid Hostel.
Looking for the best self-guided walking tours? Or perhaps you want a guide to the markets of Madrid? This guide covers it all…
10 Essential FREE Madrid Travel Apps
Free Madrid Travel Apps for Trip Planning
1. Madrid Travel Guide by Triposo
Whenever I visit a new city Triposo is the first app I download. The app lets you download offline maps that offer a brief synopsis of the history and relevance of sights in the city. So whereas on Google Maps you’d need to be connected to the internet to read an overview of a place on the map, with Triposo it’s automatically there.
The app also has a great resource section with a metro map, safety information, and general tourist information on the city of Madrid. You can either download the whole app, and then download the specific city inside the app. Or you can download the free Madrid travel app by Triposo directly.

2. Madrid Trip Planner by Tripomatic
The Madrid Trip Planner by Tripomatic has similar offline maps to the free Madrid travel app by Triposo. But the feature I love the most is the ability to plan your itinerary. It’s super easy to plan your own walking tour, and you can do it easily from your phone while you’re eating your hostel breakfast in the morning!
3. Madrid GuíaPunto Guide
The Madrid GuíaPunto Guide is available in English and Spanish and my favourite thing about this app is that the tips and sights are curated by local experts. This helps them provide a more authentic experience than the more mainstream apps and helped me find some hidden treasures during my last trip to Madrid!

4. Official Metro de Madrid Application OR Madrid Metro – Map and Routes
While I’m a huge fan of walking around a city, it never hurts to have a metro map to hand just in case! If you download the free Madrid travel app by Triposo that I mentioned in the first section, you’ll already have a metro map in the resource section. But if not, here are two other stand-alone apps you could choose from:

This free Madrid travel app is for those of you that enjoy DIY city walking tours. Just select a walk that takes your fancy, put in your headphones and follow the map. Each stage gives you a recorded history of the sight your seeing – all without paying for a guide!
