Scenic Snaps: Marrakech

by Katie Dawes

Marrakech, Morocco | June 2013

Repossessing the tough single mattress and itchy blankets from the tortoises who ran free on the rooftop terrace during the daylight hours,  the noise from the main centre square of Marrakech seemed amplified, as if the whole area I was in was contained in a single amphitheatre and we were all actors. Despite managing to find one of the only bars in town that served alcohol, Morocco being a Muslim country, the beer wasn’t helping me sleep either.

The night before I had slept in the desert, the only noise for miles being the breathing of my friends who I lay camped out with after a terrifying mini bus drive up and along the steepest cliffs I’ve ever seen and a 2-hour bum-numbing trek on the back of very well-mannered camels. Johnny, my camel, being the most well-mannered of all in comparison to the camel ahead of us who seemed to fart every time his back right hoof hit the sand.
