5 Of The Best Hostel Rooms in Europe

by Katie Dawes

The more I travel, the more I really appreciate a good night’s sleep.

Because in the hostel life, a good night’s sleep can depend on so many things: whether you are in a party hostel or not; whether you’re sharing a dorm room with groups of students or shy, silent travellers; whether you’re in a private room or a dorm; how thin the walls are; and the list goes on…

And also, the more I travel the more I see the incorporation of beautiful design within the rooms, just as the following hostels have done…

5 Of The Best Hostels Rooms in Europe

1. Die Wohngemeinschaft, Cologne

I found it quite hard to pick just one room from Die Wohngemeinschaft to be my favourite. The time and creativity that has gone in to each and every room at this hostel exceeds anything I’ve seen before and since.

However, when forced to pick just one room to be my favourite it has to be “Manu” (yes, they all have names) – a.k.a. “the glitzy Bollywood palace”.

Designed around the story of a travelling hippy who fell in love with India but was forced to return to Germany after injuring her ankle badly enough to require immediate surgery (read more here), the room is a vibrant and alluring base in the centre of Cologne’s coolest neighbourhood.

2. Hostel ROOM, Rotterdam

Another hostel that inspires creativity within the walls of its uniquely themed rooms in Hostel ROOM in Rotterdam. And again, it was hard to pick a favourite!

Despite being one of the bigger dorm rooms, I fell in love with the classic elegance and soft tones of the “Board Room”

Hostel rooms can often be dark and crammed in to old buildings that offer little natural light, but in the boardroom the sun shines through the large bay windows.

I also love the chic table and chairs – the perfect place to sit with and get to know new roommates before heading out to explore Rotterdam!

3. The Beehive, Rome

Recent readers will know how much I savoured the serene atmosphere during my time at The Beehive Ho[s]tel in Rome. The private classic rooms in the hostel couldn’t be more appreciated in the midst of a city as hectic as Rome.

REVIEW- The Beehive Ho[s]tel Rome, Italy -5

The Beehive have included all the facilities of a standard hostel, but by choosing furniture with a homely feel and complimentary calm colours  – whilst still displaying the creative nature of the owners through the mosaic basin and repurposed wood towel rack – they offer a truly tranquil overnight experience.

4. Circus Hostel, Berlin

As time comes to return to Berlin for the ITB Conference, I can’t help but remember the first time I walked into my extremely cute single room at Circus Berlin this time last year.

The delicate design of the wire-frame bed was so boutique and unlike anything I’d seen in a hostel room before. Bye bye wooden bunks!

The design of the single privates at The Circus Berlin leave plenty of space to move around and store your luggage, whilst the light from the window lit up the green and orange tones within the room perfectly, to make it a little haven in the centre of Berlin.

5. Room007 Chueca, Madrid

Bright, white, hip and retro… and with a private balcony! Every aspect of this exclusive private room at Room007 Chueca in Madrid is so far away from the perception of dirty and cramped hostel rooms of the past!

Walking in to this room, you could be mistaken to think you’d left the hostel and entered a boutique hotel in the trendiest district of Madrid – except it’s half the price of a hotel and still has a private shower and toilet, balcony and a massive bed!

Which I enjoyed to the max…
