A Hidden Slice of Paris in London: Brasserie Zédel

by Katie Dawes

As my friend led me down a stepped hallway, a fiery glow surrounding us from the burnished maroon colour scheme, I became increasingly embarrassed of the Nike Airs on my feet. By the time I saw the entrance to the basement Brasserie Zédel, my cheeks had begun to reflect the dark red tones that surrounded me, and I wished I’d worn my boots.

The Brasserie Zédel, obscure from the main street off Piccadilly Circus but for their street level café, has to be one of London’s most surprising secrets. The interior is regal in only the way maroon and gold can be, and the service equal to any I’ve received during afternoon teas with my Nana at the Ritz & Dorchester.

What’s more, a meal for two costs just £25 (including a beer each)!

If I’m honest, I know it’s possible to eat out for much cheaper than this, even in a capital city, but if you’re looking for a little slice of luxury during your budget travels, then this is exactly what you need! And the waiter didn’t even blink twice at my Nikes.

Starters are priced from £2.75 – £8.95, whilst main dishes are in the region of £8.75 – £24.95, (click here to see the full menu) but the real treat is the “Prixe Fixe” I’ve highlighted below. My friend and I went for the two course Steak Haché (with fries) and the Café Gourmand (really really good strong coffee) for £8.95, plus a beer each. Here’s our receipt & the fixed price menu:

So even if you don’t fancy eating, although I highly suggest you do as the Steak Haché was rich with flavour and the service made me feel like an old school aristocrat, the Brasserie Zédel is a beautiful hidden gem in the heart of a very metropolitan area. And it definitely beats grabbing a McDonalds after a busy morning of shopping in London’s Piccadilly Circus!

Location:

From Picadilly Circus, take Glasshouse Street on which Barclays & Boots have corner stores. When you come to the Donut Store on your right (with a big pink sign so you can’t miss it!), follow the road round to the right and a few steps on to the left you will see the ZL Café. Just walk on in and take the steps towards the back left down to the Brasserie!

Know of any other hidden budget eats that make you feel less like a backpacker and more like a princess?

Lots of love,
