A Guide to Social Media for your Hostel Marketing

It genuinely amazes me how many times I try to find the Twitter page for a hostel, only to find that it doesn’t exist. Twitter has an average of 304 million monthly active users, whilst 90% of marketers have indicated that their use of social media has generated more exposure for their business.

The quality of social media management in the hostel industry varies from the very best to the very worst, but with this guide and some examples of hostels I believe to be using social media in the best way possible, I hope to encourage more of you to engage with your guests online as well as offline!

Why do hostels need social media?

Hostels are no longer marketing primarily to large primary school groups of children or hikers in a rural setting.

Now a growing accommodation provider for the youth and student travel sector, hostels need to learn to communicate in the same way that their guests do: via social media.

  • 78% of social media users are influenced by brand social media accounts
  • 21.15% of the online conversation concerning hotels takes places on Facebook
  • 70% of Instagram users have said they have looked up a brand on Instagram
