A Brit’s Most Frequently Asked Questions!

by Katie Dawes

1. How many cups of tea do you drink in a day?

Personally, I prefer coffee to tea, but whether it be coffee or tea we brits do tend to drink anything from 3 – 10 cups of a hot drink a day. In fact I’ve usually had three coffees by midday, and I save a cup of tea for bedtime.

Interesting fact: save this question for the Turks – apparently they drink far more tea than the British!

2. Why do you call brown sauce, Daddies sauce?

Honestly… I have no idea!

3. Are British men as good-looking and charming in real life as they are in the movies?

Technically, this has always been pretty tricky to answer. First, I don’t really want to put down any of the British men out there. Second, it really does come down to personal preference (I prefer French…).

Unfortunately though, as I don’t tend to meet that many Tom Hardys, Gerard Butlers, Idris Elbas or Charlie Hunnams whist I’m walking around the local Tesco I would probably be inclined to say that the movies have definitely weeded out the good from the… not so good.

4. Why are the British so cold?

Okay, so we may have stiff upper lips and hugging is reserved for your grandparents only, but we’re actually really friendly! I think so many travellers get their first taste of Britain in London, and lets face it nowhere cultivates coldness more than the tube.

But seriously, I’m not going to discuss my feelings with you on a 7 minute journey from Tottenham Court Rd to Bank.

5. Do all British people love Harry Potter?

YES.

As illustrated by a conversation I had this week with a few friends from Uni, Harry Potter pretty much saturates a Brit’s daily life… BTW: lancs = lancaster

 6. Why do British people swear so much?

I’m not sure why we do a lot of what we do, and this includes swearing. It’s almost as if we have two levels of swearing; the C-word I would have said as being on of the higher level of outright rudeness, whereas words like shi*t tend to be used in a lot of our phrases and so are more commonly spoken on a regular basis. I’m talking of phrases like “holy sh*t” and “bloody hell” which just isn’t really swearing to most Brits.

7. What is a cheeky something when it’s at home?

Cheeky is such a difficult term to describe! An adjective that comes so easily to the British has amused a lot of my travelling buddies. So here’s a JackGap explanation… [skip to 2:20]
